Premier League 2013/14 season: Best season ever?

The 2013/14 Premier League season was tipped to be the closest and best season and thus it is living up to the expectations. There have been several managerial changes at the start of the season with ‘The Special One’ coming back to Stamford Bridge as ‘The Happy One’; David Moyes taking in the reins of Manchester United from Sir Alex Ferguson, Manuel Pellegrini replacing Mancini at Manchester City-the managerial changes at the clubs at the top of the league were making more headlines than the potential transfers.
Millions of pounds were spent by the clubs to improve their squads-Premier League clubs spent a record £630million this summer, which is a 29 per cent increase on last year’s £490million spent. All the headlines were made by the transfer saga of Gareth Bale from Totenham to Real Madrid for a world record of £85.3million. Spurs themselves went on to spend £110million on summer signings. Manchester City was not far behind spending close to £90million. United had a fairly silent transfer period with the main accomplishment of Moyes being able to hold on to Rooney from the grasp of Chelsea. Mourinho back in the hot seat of Chelsea was able to snatch long time Chelsea target Willian from the clutches of Totenham but had to settle for Eto’o and surprisingly loaned out Lukaku to Everton. Arsenal’s misery in the transfer market continued with failures to sign the likes of Higuain, Villa and Suarez but they somewhat made up for it by signing Ozil from Real Madrid.
The topsy-turvy season has seen Arsenal leading the pack followed by Liverpool with Manchester United a distant eighth at the moment-few would have predicted the tables to be the way it is at the moment. Liverpool has been fired till now by the red hot partnership of Sturridge and Suarez-although the former is out injured, Suarez alone is proving to be a handful for opposition defence.
Though Arsenal sit 2 points clear at the top, the top eight are very close to each other and the positions are changing every match day. Southampton after a mesmerising start to the season were sitting in the top four till the end of November but have now moved to 9th place. This illustrates how competitive the league is at the moment.
Though the likes of Suarez, Aguero and Sturridge have piled in the goals, there have in lots of action off the field as well-4 managers in the top flight have already been sacked and if the performances of Manchester United does not improve in the league, David Moyes’s days may be numbered as well in Old Trafford.
Arsenal have a big December-with a 6-3 loss at the hands of Manchester City and Chelsea visiting them this week, they could well be out of the top 4 by the end of December. Also expect some new signings from all the clubs in January as the clubs continue to bolster their squad to keep them in the hunt for trophies or fight to save relegation as the case may be. But the action thus far has been unparalleled and this why the Premier League has such a huge fan following.
