World Championships: Day Two as it happened

Six gold medals were decided on the day 2 of the 14th World Championships in Athletics in Moscow. The highlight of the day was the Men’s 100 meters final where Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt reigned supreme. Bolt, arguably the greatest sprinter the world has ever seen won the gold in 9.77 s. American Justin Gatlin won silver in 9.85 s and Bolt’s countryman Nesta Carter took bronze in 9.95 s.

American Ashton Eaton cemented his position as the world’s greatest athlete when he won the world decathlon title, completing a spectacular hat-trick having won Olympic gold and broken the world record last year.  Germany’s Michael Schrader took silver while Canadian Damian Warner of Canada got bronze

Sandra Perkovic won the Women’s Discus Throw event with a 67.99 metre throw. Frenchwoman Melina Robert-Michon won the silver and Cuban Yarelys Barrios had to settle for the bronze medal.

Brittney Reese became the first woman to win three long jump titles at the world championships, leaping 7.01 metres. Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare and Serbia’s Ivana Spanovic took second and third respectively

Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba won the Women’s 10,000 meters. Gladys Cherono of Kenya came second and Ethiopian Belaynesh Oljira took third position.

In Men’s 20km Walk, Aleksandr Ivanov brought the first gold for the host country. Chinese walker Ding Chen and Miguel Ángel López of Spain came second and third respectively.

However for the second straight day, the World Championships has been marred by thousands of empty seats. Rows and rows of empty seats has the potential to be embarrassing for Russia as it hosts its first major athletics championships since the Moscow Olympics of 1980.
