Australian Open: Stanislas Wawrinka wins his maiden Grand Slam

The Australian Open cam to a conclusion today with Stanislas Wawrinka winning his maiden Grand Slam by defeating an injured Rafael Nadal 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3.

The eighth seed roared to a two-set lead after top seed Nadal struggled with a back injury sustained early in the second set, but Nadal made a brilliant comeback taking the third set. However Nadal was clearly struggling to move around the court and Wawrinka took advantage of his opponent’s restrictions to take the fourth set and the match.

Nadal was gunning for his second Australian Open title and 14th overall which would have made him the only player in the open era to win each of the majors atleast twice. With this victory, Stanislas Wawrinka will overtake Roger Federer as the No. 1 Swiss player for the first time in his career.

Earlier in the morning, Canada’s Daniel Nestor and Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic beat India’s Sania Mirza and Romania’s Horia Tecau comfortably 6-3 6-2 to take the Mixed Doubles’ crown.
