PV Sindhu creates history at the Badminton World Championships

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu has made India proud by becoming the first ever Indian woman to win a medal in singles at the Badminton World Championships (India’s first singles medal since Prakash Padukone won bronze in 1983). The 18 year-old native of Andhra Pradesh won the historic bronze medal at the World Championships held in Guangzhou, China by defeating many a big gun.

Sindhu sent shockwaves when she ousted defending champion and second seeded Wang Yihan in the Pre-Quarters and continued her giant-killing act by defeating Asian Games gold medallist Shixian Wang in the Quarter Final. Sindhu, ranked 12th, settled for the bronze after her loss to world number three Ratchanok Inthanon of Thailand in the Semi Final on Saturday. In the match between the two most talented teenage shuttlers in the world, Ratchanok prevailed 21-10, 21-13 to reach the finals.  Earlier, two of India’s biggest badminton stars, Saina Nehwal and P Kashyap, were both defeated in the Quarter Finals of this prestigious event.
