The Thunderbolt strikes for the second time in Moscow

Sprint King Usain Bolt completed his sprint double by comprehensibly winning the 200m finals last night. Thus Usain Bolt completed a fourth global championship sprint double in five years when he won the 200m in the Luzhniki Stadium on Saturday night to add to his doubles in Beijing 2008, Berlin 2009 and London 2012. At 19.66, this was the slowest of his title-winning times. From his first win in Beijing, breaking Michael Johnson’s fabled Atlanta 1996 World record of 19.32 with 19.30, Bolt has won in Berlin in another World record of 19.19, in Daegu in 19.40, in London with 19.32 and now here again in Moscow. His compatriot Warren Weir won silver and American Curtis Mitchell settled for bronze. Tonight Usain Bolt will be attempting for his 3rd gold of the Championships when he competes in the Men’s 4X100m Relay.

Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda won the gold in the men’s Marathon, adding the World title to his Olympic title last year. Olympic bronze medallist Svetlana Shkolina of Russia unseated her compatriot and Olympic champion Anna Chicherova as World champion in Women’s High Jump.  In the Women’s 4x400m Relay, Russia riding on a vocal crowd support, shocked USA to clinch the gold. This was USA’s first defeat in the event since 2005. The women’s 100m Hurdles was touted to be a two horse race between Brianna Rollins and defending champion Sally Pearson and neither of them disappointed with Brianna Rollins winning the gold and Sally Pearson taking home the silver. Vitezslav Vesely of Czech Republic won the men’s Javelin Throw whereas Meseret Defar of Ethiopia made it two World Championships titles to go with her two Olympic titles when she sprinted away from her rivals to win the Women’s 5000m.
