IS IT THE END OF NAWAB OF NAJAFGARH:-
One of the most destructive batsmen in the world, Sehwag – who was originally a middle-order batsman – has redefined the role of an opener. With minimal footwork, but great hand-eye coordination, Sehwag goes after every delivery that deserves to be hit. And many that don’t! He has won many games for India with his big hitting; Sehwag can change the course of the match as easily as Morse’s parting the Red sea. According to cricketing greats he is one of the best openers of this era. The word defense is missing out from his dictionary and every time he steps out in a pitch there is a fear which is cultivated in the eyes of the opposition.
But lately the form of the Delhi dasher is a big question mark. The poor run of form has forced the selectors to withdraw Sehwag from the national side as well as compelled the franchise owners of Delhi Daredevils not to retain their star batsman. Indian Premier League is one of the most decorated leagues in the world of cricket; Sehwag was the captain of the Delhi Daredevils in the first two edition of Indian Premier League, before he quit the position to concentrate more on his batting transferring the captaincy to Gautam Gambhir. However, for the fourth edition of IPL, he was the only player to be retained by the franchise, again as captain of the Delhi Daredevils. Sehwag again led the team in the fifth edition of the league, where he made the record of being the only batsman to score five consecutive half centuries in T20s.
If we keenly retrospect the performance graph of Sehwag in IPL, we examine that he has played 79 matches and has made 2174 runs at a strike rate of 160.82. Is he worth retaining for Delhi Daredevil? According to many pundits: no. One of the most entertaining Indian openers has been a true disappointment for Delhi franchise in the last season, except for an impressive 95 against Mumbai Indians; Sehwag has just not fired with the bat.
Did Delhi Daredevils do the right thing by not retaining Sehwag? According to me, yes they did what sounded right, if we analyze carefully Delhi Daredevils were the title contenders for the previous 6 seasons and they have eventually faltered each time. The same was the plight with Kolkata Knight Riders for the first 3 seasons under the captaincy of Saurav Ganguly, and so they didn’t retain their icon player for the next season. There were lots of noise, but KKR silenced their critics by winning the IPL in the 5th season. The same principle is being applied by Delhi Daredevils. They want to build a new team and may be they are looking for new talents, who can fill the big void left by Sehwag.
Discarded veteran Sehwag has been kept under the bracket of Rs 2 crores in the upcoming auction of the seventh edition of IPL. It is not easy to predict the perplexed nature of the auction which is to be held on 8th to 10th of February as we have seen many star players like Herschelle Gibbs, Saurav Ganguly and even Chris Gayle were not in the radar of any of the franchises and with such a high price tag it might also be the case with Sehwag.
Lastly, There is a famous saying OLD IS GOLD, and Sehwag has got the experience and is a world class opener. Further more he is a part time off spinner which is an added bonus for him and the team. Sehwag definitely deserves one last chance in IPL to show his class and with the two World Cups coming up; he can use the platform of IPL to cement his place in the Indian side.
