Champions League: Real Madrid out to set right their record in Germany, Chelsea face Galatasaray

Last night was very fruitful for last season’s finalists Borussia Dortmund as they blasted away Zenit St Petersburg 4-2 and thus firmly in the driver’s seat of the Round of 16 tie. But it was another bad night for an English team as Manchester United’s awful form this season continued after they had succumbed to a damaging 2-0 defeat away at Olympiakos.

The last two matches of the first leg of the Round of 16 take place tonight with Real Madrid away at Schalke and Galatasary welcome Chelsea. Real Madrid may be the record nine-time European champions but they have an awful record when it comes to playing in Germany. Their 4-1 loss at Borussia Dortmund in last season’s semi-final first leg was their 25th visit and their 18th defeat in Germany and all these years they have managed just a solitary win in the German soil. So when they face Schalke tonight, it would be a mission for them to get a win in Germany and also improve upon their current 26 match unbeaten run in all competitions.

The Round of 16 is turning out to be a nightmare for the English teams and tonight Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea travel to Galatasaray where they will come up against their former talisman Didier Drogba and 50,000 strong partisan crowd. The Turk Telecom Arena of Galatasaray have proved to be a tough ground to play for the bigger teams as they have already defeated Juventus this season and Real Madrid last season at the ground.
