France vs Nigeria: Can the Super Eagles triumph over Les Blues

Nigeria will take on tournament favorites France tonight in the Round of 16 encounter at Brasilia.

This is Nigeria’s third appearance in the round of 16 of the World Cup. Nigeria had reached the second round on their first two World Cup appearances in 1994 and 1998 but they have failed to reach this stage since then. This time they would be hoping to reach their first World Cup quarter-final but in front of them are the 1998 World Champions, France who have been in sparkling form in the World Cup having won their group without much ado. However, the current African champions are certainly no pushovers and on their day can be quite menacing. But it remains to be seen if they can stop the European powerhouse.

After the disastrous 2010 World Cup, it seems that France have recovered with the team exuding great team spirit and unity under their coach Didier Deschamps. Spearheading France’s attack is Karim Benzema, who has been in the form of his life this season having scored 24 goals in 52 games in all competitions for Real Madrid, and he has already scored three times in this World Cup. Also their midfield has been really impressive with the diminutive Mathieu Valbuena in great form. While doubt remains over their defense, still France will be overwhelming favorites to reach the quarters.
