Spain, the masters in dominating world sport

Spain has made a name for itself not only due to their Tomatina festival or Picasso. From Madrid to San Sebastian, all parts of the country seem to have the access to resources which definitely are of international standards in order to attract more youngsters to take up sport as their profession.

Firstly, football is its national sport. Their team has been the best in the world since the last 7 years. They remained undefeated from November 2006 to June 2009, won the Euro 2008 and 2012 championships as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Iker Casillas, their captain is by far the best goalkeeper in the game.

Most of their players are representing the best club teams in the world such as Fernando Torres, Raul, Xavi and Cesc Fabregas. This list can go on and on, while the La Liga tournament is right up with the English Premier League as the most popular globally. Real Madrid is the richest football club in the world according to the 2013 edition of the Forbes magazine!

Then comes tennis. The country had good players in Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero but not as good as Rafael Nadal. He is the only man to have won a single Grand Slam 8 times! If there is anyone who made Roger Federer’s life miserable when he was at the top of the tennis world, it was Nadal. He may still be called a clay court specialist but he is the only Spanish player who has somewhat managed to adapt to other courts successfully.

Spain is well represented by youngsters such as David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro also and this has been proven with their dominance in Davis Cup tennis, which decides which is the No.1 country in this game. They have won 5 times in the last decade!

In motorsport, Fernando Alonso is one of the most accomplished Formula One racers currently, having won 2 World Championships and driven for Renault and Ferrari. And in motorcycling, Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez are present champions having a bright future ahead.

Cycling considers Miguel Indurain as the finest of all time, especially after the doping allegations on Lance Armstrong. The Spaniard had won at home, France and Italy more often than not, which is the most prestigious for any cyclist due to these being the toughest conditions.

And lastly, Pau Gasol has been an integral part of the NBA since a decade and plays for the famous Los Angeles Lakers team. He has also led his country to being the best in European basketball and second best in world basketball.

If only they manage their economy well, Spain can continue to wonders in sport.
