Does English football need to do away with the unimportant League Cup?

The Football League Cup, commonly known as the League Cup or by a name referring to the current sponsor, is an English men’s association football competition. Like the FA Cup, it is played on a knockout (single elimination) basis. Unlike the FA Cup, where 758 teams entered in 2012–13, only 92 clubs can enter the League Cup – the 20 Premier League clubs, and the 72 clubs of The Football League, which organizes the competition.
Although the League Cup is one of the three major domestic trophies attainable by English league teams, it is perceived by larger clubs as a lower priority than the league championship, UEFA Champions League, and the FA Cup. League Cup winners receive £100,000 prize money (awarded by the Football League) with the runners-up receiving £50,000, considered relatively insignificant to top flight teams, compared to the £2 million prize money of the FA Cup, which is in turn eclipsed by the Premier League’s television money (awarded on final league position) and consequent participation in the Champions League.
One of the reasons why English football should do away with the unimportant league cup is the Europa headache. If we glance through the starting lineups of the top teams playing this tournament we can see that they dedicate much less attention to the fixtures of this Cup. A reason for this is the hectic schedule of long-haul flights to far-off climes, in-between Premier League action which is a headache that the majority of managers would seemingly prefer not to deal with. For small clubs with limited budgets & squads, a place in Europa league means interrupting domestic progress.
Another reason to do away with League Cup is for the clubs to focus on bigger challenges. Top Clubs know very well to which Tournament they should give importance and to which they should not. These clubs very often play with their “B-teams” so that they can give rest to their best players in the squad and make them ready for the important Champions league game & other similar games where the fame is high and also the price money is high.
With the top four Premier League clubs qualifying for Europe’s premier competition, the big teams are faced with a busier fixture list than ever. Long gone are the days of the European Cup being competed solely by domestic champions. Additionally, the Champions League format replacing what always used to a knockout competition means that those top four clubs are involved for longer than in the past. Previously, the League Cup would have been sought after as it offered a route into glamorous European football, via the then-respected UEFA Cup. However, that is no longer the case and achieving a high league finish is of greater priority. As is the case, it is almost inevitable that the League Cup has suffered and no longer considered a major honor. Greater allure and financial rewards can be found in the bigger boys’ playground.
