Aaron Ramsey is Arsenal's Titan.

Aaron Ramsey is Arsenal's Titan.

Arsene Wenger was angry over the referee’s decision of sending off Aaron Ramsey as his side drew at Besiktas in the Champions League play-off rounds. Last season Ramsey was man of the match in the Champions League playoff first leg, scoring against Fenerbahce and then twice again in the second leg, booking a ticket to Champions League. After all Arsenal’s Player of the Season for 2013-14, Ramsey has been the go to guy for Arsenal eclipsing superstars like Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Jack Wilshere.

After returning to full fitness in 2011-12 season, Ramsey has re-established himself as a regular starter for Gunners. The absence of Mikel Arteta from Arsenal’s midfield saw Wenger field Ramsey in a deeper midfield role and Ramsey thrived in the new position. During the 2013–14 Premier League season, Ramsey developed into one of Arsenal’s most influential player. Whether it be his spectacular long ranger in a 2–0 win against Liverpool or solo goal against Norwich, whenever the club called for Ramsey delivered. The performance made Wenger describing Ramsey as a "complete midfielder.

Ozil moved to Arsenal last year for a club-record fee of £42.5 million becoming the most expensive German football player of all time while Ramsey moved to Arsenal in 2008 for a £5 million deal. Interestingly, Ozil had 7 goals and 12 assists last season primarily playing behind the striker while Ramsey from a defensive midfield position clocked 16 goals and 8 assists Ramsey was named as. This form despite missing over three months of the season got him a deserved final shortlist for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

The Welshmen is a box-to-box midfielder and blends superior technique with intelligent and powerful running style. He is known for his technical ability, brushing opponents off and running away with ease. But his biggest strength lies his seamless transition between offensive and defensive play. Whether it be an emphatic first-touch volley or an intricate build-up play or even free kicks, he is always crucial in attack. When Arsenal is not in possession of the ball, he is a tackling powerhouse. Looking at his interceptions and clearances in each game, one get the feeling that Ramsey is a central defender. But as soon as the team gets hold of the ball he transitions into a counter attacking or a playmaking attacker and at times attempting more shots than outright strikers.

Arsenal’s Achilles’ heel has been their soft midfield and thus an open game. For neutrals, it’s a great watch but it may result in Gunners struggling in absence of Aaron Ramsey as against Besiktas. Last season, before Ramsey’s injury, Arsenal’s win percentage was 68%, in his absence it fell to 55%.Played in a central midfield or right wing position, Ramsey applied his versatile skill set and building strong central midfield partnership with Flamini that Arsenal have been missing for long, becoming their most crucial player. He can defend, he can attack, and he can score goals providing the bite in midfield.

Ramsey is consistently in an unbelievable form for the last few seasons and creating history with a string of incredible performances. His knack of coming up with crucial goals like the winner 2014 FA Cup Final ending Arsenal’s nine-year wait for a trophy or scoring Arsenal’s second goal in their Community Shield victory, Aaron Ramsey has cemented his position of being the go to guy for Arsenal. With the central midfielders only getting better with time, Ramsey’s ceiling is Colossus. With his tireless energy, strong and intelligent technique, tigerish tackling and ultimate transitioning between attack and defence, Ramsey could become as influential as a Gerrard or Toure. Oh and, just in case you forgot he’s just 23 years old. Move aside Ozil and Sanchez: Aaron Ramsey is Arsenal’s Titan.
