Super Sunday: The Biggest Game of English Football and the North London Derby

This is definitely the most blockbuster weekend of football in the Premier League. With leaders Chelsea stumbling to a defeat against Aston Villa on Saturday, Sunday will witness two cracking matches with the two most successful English clubs, Manchester United and Liverpool facing each other while in the other match fans all over the world will be anticipating the lip-smacking North London derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

Both Tottenham and Arsenal would be aiming for nothing less than three valuable points, albeit for completely different reasons. Tottenham have been erratic all along this season and their already faltering hopes of clinching a fourth place finish in the Premier League would very well be over on Sunday if they cannot win against their No. 1 foe. As for Arsenal, they badly need a victory to keep up their title challenge after another Round of 16 exit from the Champions League.

Tottenham have been really poor against all the top teams in this season and just last week they got hammered 4-0 by Chelsea. They really need to win against a top team and none could be better than a win against their neighbours. However, Arsenal have triumphed in each of the two meetings between the teams this season, winning the league game at home 1-0 in September prior to a 2-0 success in the third round of the FA Cup.

But the North London derby might be in danger of being overshadowed by the match dubbed as the biggest game in English football. The huge number of trophies that had been won by the two clubs, between them they have a total of 121 titles, including 38 English 1st division titles and 8 Champions League honours, proves why this match is the biggest thing in English football. As in recent seasons, the fixture does not however pit two title rivals against one another, but in a role reversal during the Premier League era, it is Manchester United who face their bitter rivals chasing a place in Europe, while Liverpool are vying for their first title in the Premier League era.

Liverpool go into this match in imperious goalscoring form with their deadly strikers, Suarez and Sturridge have already amassed 42 goals between themselves in the Premier League. However one area of concern for the Liverpool is their suspect defence. As for Manchester United, nothing seems to be going in their favour this season but a win against their bitter rivals might ignite their pursuit of the lucrative Champions League spot.
