Day 2 US Open 2013 : Stosur stunned by American ; Djokovic,Federer,Azarenka sizzle through

It did not take a day more than one for the big upsets to set in at the pompous Flushing Meadows. After a 2 hours 39 minutes of play commencing in the late afternoon terminated the hopes of the 29 year old, 2011 Champion Samantha Stosur of making another mark. 17 year old teenager Victoria Duval a Haiti-American stood strong against the more dominant Australian, erring on two of four match points she finally fore handed into a win (5-7, 6-4, 6-4) setting up the biggest upset so far. Rest of the matches did not break and shock any more hearts, Roger Federer overcame Grega Zemlja, in a non-troublesome 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 win. The match was delayed by a day due to the lashing showers on the opening day after the ceremony. Federer showed divine agility and seemed to be tackling the court with the energy of a 22-year old and thus re-declaring that his perilous threat is alive for the title. Later that day Djokovic showed little mercy on Berankis, where he closed the deal with a powerful 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 straight set winner. The Serb, who is seeded 1 and finalist from last year, would be happy with this comeback win unlike the last time he was here. No other seeded player faced a setback during eithr halves, 6th seeded Danish Wozniacki cruised past Ying Duan in 6-2, 7-5. Kvitova, Kuznetsova, Tommy Haas, Tomas Berdych booked their seats for the next Round, in straight sets. The 2008 Roland Garros Champion, Ana Ivanovic had no hurdles either against the Georgian Anna Tatishvili and reached the 2nd round in ease with 6-2, 6-0 on the scoreboard. Coming to talk of powerful performances, while Serena, a day earlier had demolished her opponent 6-0, 6-1 , Victoria Azarenka the 2nd seed of the tournament sizzled past Dinah Pfizenmaier 1up in 6-0,6-0 straight sets. Hitting winners from all over the court the two time Australian Open champion and runners-up from last year, gave the German no time to breathe.

Well that was into the past, Day 3 brings a plethora of mixed encounters with both Round 1 and Round 2 matches. At Arthur Ashes, Juan Martin Del Potro and Andy Murray the defending would be the ones to look for playing in Round 1 in the first half and the second half of the day, respectively. Today Somdev Devvarman the only Indian to qualify for the tournament takes on the Slovakian Lukas Lacko with the strategy of ‘taking one game at a time’. In other draws we have Na Li, the 5th seeded Chinese take on the Swedish Arviddson in Round 2. The Williams sisters have their round 2 matches as well, while in the first half one can also catch the 3rd seeded Polish Agnieszka Radwanska take on the Spaniard Maria Teresa for qualifying into Round 3.

So that’s that for Day 2, Day 3 is knocking on the door so be sure to be tuned in for all the high end drama that would occur at the Flushing Meadows to qualify into the Round of the final 32, in the last Grand Slam of the year.
