ATP 500 events: Djokovic and Del-Potro emerge as winners at Beijing and Tokyo

Djokovic and Del Potro emerge winners at ATP events at Beijing and Tokyo respectfully. They overcame their opponents in straight sets. While Djokovic prevailed over Nadal 6-3 6-4, Del-Potro overcame the big serving Canadian, who has been in good form in recent times.

Novak Djokovic lost his World No 1 ranking, after Rafael Nadal made it to the final. The victory would come quite as a compensation for him, as he ended Nadal’s hard court winning streak this year, and meanwhile extending his un-beaten run at the China Open. This is Djokovic’s 4th Beijing title, who is yet to be defeated at China Open.

In today’s final, Djokovic looked quite determined to overcome the Spanish Juggernaut. He needed to make a statement. And he did exactly the same. He played with utmost concentration in both the sets, and broke Nadal early and avoid giving him any sort of momentum. There was nothing Rafa could do, as Nole was clearly the better player today.

Looking at other players, it was more or less a standard performance from all the players. Sam Querry played well to upset Wawrinka and reach the quarterfinals, whereas Gasquet stepped up his bid to get selected for the ATP finals by reaching the semi finals, defeating David Ferrer on the way.

Meanwhile, Del Potro overcame Raonic in a closely contested match. The first set was stretched to the tiebreak, wherein Del-Potro made the only mini-break, and won the tiebreak 7-5. In the second set, Del-Potro produced the only service break in the match, and took the second and the decisive set. Being his 15th title, DelPotro’s qualification into the ATP finals is somewhat assured, and as a bonus, he will rise up to the 5th spot in the ATP rankings.

Though it has been an interesting week as far as tennis is concerned, it is not over as yet, as the Shanghai masters is already underway, and the top seeds have been given a bye in their first round matches.
