Rafael Nadal battles past Marcel Granollers at Paris Masters
Rafael Nadal kicked off his campaign for a maiden Paris Masters title with a 7-5 7-5 victory over fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers.
It took Nadal until the 11th game of the opening set to get the break, and he held serve to hold the advantage.
Nadal was playing at the Paris Masters for the first time since 2009. He missed the tournament for the past three years because of injuries or fatigue.
The World No. 1 is seeking a record sixth Masters title in a single season.
Waiting for the 13-time Grand Slam champion in the next round is Polish 14th seed Jerzy Janowicz.
