What does big money of PSG and AS Monaco mean to French Ligue 1?

In the past, the French Ligue 1 has been known for a defensive-minded style. It has also been known as a league that developed young talents rather than signing veterans from other leagues. This was the case, until recently when PSG changed that culture and started to bring in expensive players. Other teams could not compete with PSG signings, due to the club hefty financial backing—now Monaco can change that. With a rich billionaire owner, the Ligue 1 culture will be changed even more. Instead of one, there are now two mega money teams that will be going head-to-head. We can also expect the trend to continue, that is, signing more big name world footballers—particularly strikers to spruce up the French league, resulting in more attacking football and more goal scoring.

With AS Monaco only 2 points behind the league leaders we can expect to see a PSG dynasty come to an end. PSG may still be the favorite to win the Ligue 1 this year because it will take a while for Monaco to dominate the league, but the gap between PSG and the rest of the league will get smaller.

No sooner had they won a first title in 19 years than coach Carlo Ancelotti made public his wish to join Real Madrid.

After several big-name snubs, former France national manager Laurent Blanc, by no means a first-choice for the Qatari-backed club, was appointed after limited experience with Bordeaux.

Blanc’s squad looks even stronger than the one assembled for Ancelotti with no major departures and defenders Marquinhos from Roma and Lucas Digne from Lille having joined.

With Monaco’s infuse of world talents like Falcao and a strong financial backing it will quickly bring an end to PSG dynasty, much like the way PSG did to Lyons’ (which had its share of multiple Ligue 1 titles in a row). PSG will still win other league titles, only there will be more parity in Ligue 1.

The signing of Falcao has given Monaco a deadly-scoring combination with Ibra up top. Don’t be surprised if this signing puts Monaco into the Marseille-PSG rivalry as well.

Although a 1-1 draw with title rivals Paris Saint-Germain is an impressive result for Monaco, there was a lot left to be desired in their performance.

There are still a number of mistakes being made across the pitch, and the team looks every bit the young side still finding their feet together that they are.

Ligue 1 needs a good infuse of well-balanced, classic matchup to draw the attention of other big names in European football to come to this league—Monaco signing Radamel Falcao and PSG’s signing Cavani and many more is a good step in that direction.
