Australian Open Day 5: Top Seeds Go Through

Top seeds, both in the mens and womens quarter had little trouble in overcoming their respective round 3 opponents in an another hot day at the Melbourne.

Novak Djokovic, the top seed at the bottom half, had little trouble in dispatching D Istomin in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 7-5. Other top seeds who had a relatively easier day include David Ferrer and Thomas Berdych. Berdych is yet to drop a set in AO this year, and looks to be in red hot form. Stan Wawrinka got a walkover after his 3rd Round opponent Vasek Pospisil couldn’t participate in the match due to injury. The upset list include 9th seed Richard Gasquet, who lost to 17th seed old-horse Tommy Robredo. Moreover, Florian Mayer, unseeded from Germany, upsetted 20th seed Jerzy Janowicz in straight sets.

Jerzy openly admitted that he was underprepared for the tournament and was happy with his 3rd round result at the AO.

In the women’s draw, Li Na had a rough day, after she had to face a match point while facing her Cezh opponent L Safarova. But Serena had no trouble in overcoming the Slovakian D Hantuchova, as she defeated her in straight sets. Unseeded C Dellacqua carried forward the Australian hopes, as she overcame J Zheng in straight sets. Sam Stosur, Australia’s best contender as far as the Women’s draw is concerned, was knocked out by 14th seed Ana Ivanovic in straight sets.  Kerber and Pennetta also had an easier day at the office.

Day 6 is expected to be a cracker, as many top seeds, including the likes of Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Sharapova, are scheduled to play.
