What makes Dhoni so valuable for India??

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been under the scanner after the dismal performance showed by the Indian side in the last two years. The team has failed to secure a win since the last 14 test matches that it has played. And what’s been more disappointing has been the way India has been losing or settling for a draw after being in the driver’s seat for most part of the matches. Many former players have expressed their dissent and attribute this failure to the defensive tactics employed by Dhoni. After the recently concluded series where India lost to New Zealand, there have been many, including Ian Chappell, Martin Crowe have commented that the time has come for Dhoni to pass on the baton to someone else who would probably be Virat Kohli. Apart from this Dhoni has also been surrounded by controversies related to his IPL Franchise Chennai Super Kings. Getting injured was the last thing which he would have wanted and to his bad luck that also happened to him and he is out of Asia Cup. In spite of some poor performances in the recent past Dhoni still remains indispensable for the Indian side both as a captain and a player. The reasons for this are numerous. The team in this phase is undergoing a period of transition. With players of class like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman retiring from the game, the team has certainly missed the calmness and composure. During these turbulent times Dhoni has been able to manage the team to a great deal by banking on the young guns in the side. Had it not been for Dhoni’s faith in his team, India could have been suffering from deeper troubles. India has had a decent run in the ODI’s and its been the test matches which have been the real problem. The players under Dhoni’s leadership have shown that they have the capability but it’s only a matter of time that things would start to fall in place. Moreover there is no better alternative except Virat Kohli, who also seems not to be ready step into this new responsibility. He has surely been India’s best batsman in the recent years but captaincy may put additional pressure on him and it cannot be said with certainty that he would be able to absorb that pressure as Dhoni has done. India has lost many of its match winners like Virender Sehwag,  Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh who were dreaded by opposition teams due to poor form and performances. And if India loses Dhoni too, the mighty Indian batting line-up would look too fragile.  Not to mention his ability to finish games for his side makes him even more valuable along with the safe pair of hands which he has. All this combined with the cool head over his shoulders make him indispensable for the team and surely there is a long way to go before we think of challenging his place as captain and member of the Indian Cricket team and lets hope that he can emulate the performance of World Cup 2011 in 2015 under him.
